Our Mission
INSTAR Lab is an independent research institute advancing scientific discovery to enhance research, development, theory, education, innovation, and societal growth — translating those advances into real-world benefit through the INSTAR Consortium and direct technology transfer. Headquartered in Marietta, Ohio — Ohio's oldest town — and rooted in the Appalachian research community, we are a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation accountable to the public interest, not to shareholders.
Our researchers work from INSTAR Research Residences — converted Victorian homes in Marietta equipped with fiber-optic connectivity, scientific libraries, and the quiet focus corners where rigorous thinking flourishes. We draw on the talents of Appalachian scientists and collaborate with university researchers across disciplines. Every researcher who joins INSTAR gains genuine intellectual freedom, a broad interdisciplinary network, and institutional support unconstrained by departmental politics or commercially-driven agendas.
Our Vision
INSTAR is a research institute working at the genuine frontier of the possible — advancing applied science across AI, quantum, energy, health, and the broad sciences, then translating those advances into real-world impact through the INSTAR Consortium and direct technology transfer to partner companies in the region and beyond. The most important scientific questions are pursued by the most capable researchers, unconstrained by institutional inertia or commercial pressure, and the benefits of that science reach the public. Our north star is advancing civilization toward the Kardashev scale — we empower scientists and projects that move humanity up that ladder.

How We Advance Science
INSTAR Lab is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit research institute headquartered in Marietta, Ohio — Ohio's oldest town. Research happens inside INSTAR Research Residences: converted Victorian homes where leading scientists work in deep focus, supported by fiber-optic infrastructure and a culture of intellectual rigor. We advance science through the INSTAR Consortium — specialized partners, Appalachian researchers, and collaborating university teams combining rigorous methodology with applied research across AI, quantum science, energy, health, and the broad sciences.
Research
Rigorous, evidence-driven programs spanning the natural sciences, social sciences, and technology — pursued at a thought-leadership level with genuine intellectual independence.
Transfer
Mature capabilities transition to enterprise and government partners through STTR programs, collaborative engagements, and direct technology transfer — closing the gap between discovery and deployment.
Collaborate
The INSTAR Consortium unites five specialized partner organizations whose methods in R&D prioritization, technology-readiness assessment, and creative problem-solving accelerate research translation.
Our Principles
These values are not aspirational — they are operational. They govern how we select research, how we work with partners, and how we steward resources entrusted to us by donors and the public.
Intellectual Freedom
Our researchers pursue questions they judge to be important. Research agendas are set by scientific merit, not by donor preference, departmental politics, or short-term commercial pressure.
Scientific Rigor & Reproducibility
Every research program is held to standards of methodological rigor and reproducibility. We do not publish results we cannot defend, and we do not overstate findings.
Public Benefit & Accountability
As a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation, we are legally and ethically accountable to the public interest. Our work must ultimately benefit society, not merely advance careers or generate commercial returns.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The most significant advances come from the intersection of disciplines. INSTAR is intentionally structured to bring together investigators from different fields — because that is where non-obvious connections become genuine breakthroughs.
ACCOUNTABILITY & TRANSPARENCY
INSTAR Lab Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit research organization, IRS-recognized since 2020 and headquartered in Marietta, Ohio. We operate as a private operating foundation — meaning we run our own research programs rather than simply making grants. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law under IRC §170.
Our tax identification number and organizational details are available on request. IRS Form 990 filings are available upon request at [email protected].
